Specialists Come Together in New Building
Most of Kadlec Health System’s specialty practices will soon be under one roof. Kadlec
broke ground in late July on the 60,000-square-foot Specialty Physicians Medical Office
Building at 1100 Goethals. If all goes according to plan, the $19.2 million, three-story
structure will open in the fall of 2013.
“It’s all about preparing for the future,” says Ken Lester, president, Kadlec Clinic. “We can
enhance coordination among medical specialty groups and provide a single point of entry
to care, similar to the Mayo Clinic model.”
Richland Mayor John Fox noted at the groundbreaking ceremony: “Kadlec is a major and
growing employer in Richland. This new building will help make for a more attractive and
economically viable central business district.”
Chervenell Construction of Kennewick is the general contractor and the building was
designed by TGB Architects of Edmonds.
“We’ve been leasing space at different locations but now Kadlec is moving toward owning
its buildings,” explains RandWortman, president and CEO, Kadlec Health System. That will
save a tremendous amount of money in the long run.”
Kadlec Neuroscience Center will occupy most of the building’s ground floor. It was formed
in 2008 to bring a comprehensive teamof neurosurgeons, neurologists, painmanagement
experts and physiatrists (physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists) to the Mid-
Columbia region. These highly-trained professionals offer a wide range of diagnostic and
treatment services to patients with conditions related to the brain, spine, spinal cord and
peripheral nervous system.
“Neuroscience Center staff will include 10 physicians, three mid-level providers and up to 30
support staff,” says Matt Fewel, MD, a neurosurgeon and Center board chairman. “Very few
patients will ever need to leave the Tri-Cities for advanced treatment.”
The new building also will be home to some 65 Kadlec Clinic specialists in ear, nose and
throat; endocrinology; gastroenterology and infectious diseases – as well as cardiothoracic
surgery, vascular surgery and general surgery. Over the next few years, Kadlec plans to
recruit additional specialists in cardiology, pulmonology and urology. Patients will see
providers for outpatient services and many minor procedures in the new building, with
major surgeries done at the nearby Medical Center.
