Kids + Safety
One of the largest events of its kind in the country, the annual
Safe Kids Saturday
aligns kids with fun while teaching them important safety principles. Held on the Kadlec
campus, the safety fair brought together more than 30 local non-profit agencies,
200 volunteers and 3,000 attendees.
The 2012 event featured a children’s bike rodeo, car seat safety checks and bike helmet
fittings. There were fire trucks and an emergency helicopter for kids to see. Children
went through a life-safety house to learn how to escape a home safely in a fire.
Hands-on activities and information were available on water safety, poison prevention,
substance abuse, early childhood development and much more.
Kadlec Academy
is a new five-week fitness program offered to area elementary schools.
It teaches young people how to be active and to make healthy choices. Also covered is
kid-friendly information on the function of the heart, brain, bones and lungs, plus sound
advice on nutrition and conditions such as diabetes. Fifteen schools signed up to take
part in the 2012-2013 school year.
Heart-Pounding HeartChase
More than 200 people participated in the American Heart Association’s HeartChase
Tri-Cities event in Richland. Kadlec was the title sponsor of the event in which teams
of two to five people combine technology with athleticism to raise awareness of and
research funds for America’s #1 leading cause of death — heart disease.
HeartChase brought families, friends and co-workers of all ages together in a community-
wide competition to uncover clues, solve puzzles and complete challenges in a race
to the finish line. It had all the excitement of popular TV shows The Amazing Race and
Minute to Win It.
“This was an incredibly fun, new way to promote healthy living and support a great
cause,” said Jim Hall, executive chair, HeartChase Tri-Cities. “Altogether, we raised over
$40,000.”
“We believe in a holistic
approach to meeting
people’s needs of body,
mind and spirit.”
